How I've made the world a better place.

The below is how I have made the world a better place;
  • My paper products that I purchase are 100% recycled with a minimum of 90% post consumer waste.
  • My laundry soap is plant based
  • My light bulbs are compact fluorescent
  • I recycle
  • I walk and take the stairs when possible
  • The thermostat in my house is set at 68 degrees (F)
  • I bring my own cloth bags to go shopping
  • I bring my own reusable water bottle instead of purchasing a plastic water bottle
In the past year I have participated in the following:
  • Climate Cycle Chicago which raises money for the Chicago Public Schools to go solar.
  • Bike the Drive which uses the entry money to create more bike paths in Chicago.
  • Headed the food drive at my former employer. The drive raised $1100.00 and hundreds of pounds of food.

  1. This is how I am (hopefully) making the world a better place:
    -I recycle
    -I take public transportation or walk if possible.
    -Many of my light bulbs are compact fluorescent.
    -I turn off the lights when I leave a room in my house.
    -I donated money and food to the food drive held last year at my employer.
    -I am sure there are many other ways I could make the world a better place, and I will be on the look out for them.

  3. Here is how I make the world a better place:

    I counsel children and teens at an agency called Bremen Youth Services in Oak Forest, Illnois. These children struggle with the effects of divorce, physical abuse, sexual abuse, substance abuse, the loss of a parent or family member, behavioral issues, etc. I work toward helping these individuals (or sometimes counseling groups) to make better decisions as well as to become more empowered in their lives. All things that I counsel may not stick with these clients but if at least one little thing does stick, it is one step closer to making that child/teen a better person which makes our world a little better.

  4. This week I had a opportunity to teach my son about bullying. Another child was picking on him and called him a name...

    My son and I had a heart to heart about how wrong it is to pick on others for being different; tall, short, skinny, fat, straight, gay, white, black and so on.

    I keep in mind that bullying starts at such a young age. If we teach our kids when they are young and set good examples, they will carry it forward.

  5. I recycle all Mike's beer cans! :)

    When mowing, I mulch grass/leaves and dump in garden for future fertilizer;

    Turn heat WAY down during day when no one is home, and at night while sleeping to conserve on energy.

    Don't use disposable silverware/dishware; only use dishwasher and washer/dryer when full (which is always!)

    Constantly bring kids' (and my) outgrown clothing to goodwill places for someone else to get good use out of.

  6. Hi I would say that I recycle and generally in NYC I do! But I am living abroad and here in the country of Georgia they do not recycle. There are a lot of other social problems that are more immediately being addressed. Although I believe that this will change and there are people looking in that direction here. I do hang my clothes out on a line to dry, use showers instead of bathing but it is a situation where I have no bath and there are no launder mats. So, not a lot of it is under my control at the moment. I try not to buy things I have already and this means clothing just for the sake of it's on sale, yet if I have several items of the same kind and I buy a new one I recycle the old. Our lights and electrical appliances are normally turned off during the day or not in use. The power goes off a lot here and so to waste it during the times it is on seems decadent. I walk almost everywhere even though it is cheap to hop in a cab but the amount of exhaust in the air is choking so why add to it? I've adopted a stray cat (two actually but one disappeared) since there is a problem with strays in the city. I feel like I could do more and am considering working with the only NGO here dealing with this problem. Right now none of what I do feels like enough but I think that the purpose of this blog is to try and help people realize that a little is better than nothing at all. I have in the past helped work on Urban community gardens, Eco education and participated in clean up parks organizational days.

  7. Every little bit helps, i guess.... leftover water from the wine bucket goes towards watering the plants. Not using the styrofoam cups for coffee at work, but using a mug.... bringing my own shopping bags to the store. recycling the bags that i do end up with. reusable lunch bag and tupperware. I even make the office use recycled copy paper!

    step by step....

  9. Hi Michael, sorry it's taken a while to post this response to your Tweet.

    We try to make the world a better place by publishing academic research and books on sustainability in economics, design, energy, water usage, agriculture and much more.

    We try to make the world a better place by sharing the knowledge and expertise of our authors in accessible ways and by using new technologies (see, for example, the Earthcasts www.earthscan.co.uk/earthcasts)

    We try to make the world a better place by practicing what we preach and integrating sustainability into our business practices - whether it's a recycled green stand at a book fair or choosing our printers based on their environmental credentials, or making sure our office uses environmentally-friendly products.
